Tethered - designed or modified to remain attached to the user
- Pros - cannot be accidentally released, so are rarely lost into audience despite skill of user
- Cons - hard to remove if tethers get tangled, tools often sail the farthest if tethers break.
Untethered - usually rigid hand-held implements
- Pros - often very safe for user, made to higher construction standards, spotters are often more prepared to retrieve if lost.
- Cons - can be unintentionally released
